Lots
have been going on lately, diagnostics
are becoming
more of a daily part of the business. Not that the Series 2a
has missed out though !

What do you reckon to the subtle improvements over page 1 ? ok,
so its not a different vehicle, but its now become so much a
part
of the daily routine that we felt we owed it some
more improvement.
It has to be said that the rear springs were worn. The only thing
holding the comfort element together were the seats !
For practicality and useability heavy duties were fitted, the
vehicle is called upon for so many varied tasks that tougher
springs and shocks were the only real option.
But . . . . the heater fan has broken . . . . off we go
again with more stripdowns. . . .

After taking the heater matrix
and fan motor to pieces
it was discovered the internal contacts for the heater motor
were fouled. The fan itself was also turning when it felt like it,
due to the spindle working loose. Added to this the fan switch
was working of its own accord mainly due to being clogged up
with dirt. Not much for it really but to clean every contactable
surface and earthing point that could be found.
The result . . . well, I now have a windscreen that clears !
They say trouble comes in three's and as anybody with
a Series vehicle will know this is true. After working the vehicle
all day I push the button, there's a croak from the starter and
everything electrical stops working ? So, after tracing every
connection it appeared the starter itself was at fault.

The main spring had broken leaving so much play that it
looks like the starter motor was jammed. While on the bench I
thought it would be a good idea to dismantle and clean the rest
of the assembly. So now we are cured again (for now anyway)
What will be next I wonder ? I didn't have long to wait.
The starter motor was fine which is more than I can say for
the starting switch itself.
As with all things Series 2a parts are becoming more
sought after, where possible I like to try and preserve things.
Especially switches and the more fiddly parts. It took what
felt like a lifetime but, with a lot of care, it is possible
to separate the two halves.
The contacts were almost black.

Out with the file, wire wool and it's as good as new.
One touch starting !
